Volunteering for the Advocacy Service Aberdeen
Worthwhile – Friendly – Fun – Fulfilling
Are you a good listener? Could you help someone speak up for themselves?
‘Volunteering is the giving of time and energy through a third party, which can bring measurable benefits to the volunteer, individual beneficiaries, groups and organisations, communities, the environment and society at large.
It is a choice undertaken of one’s own free will and is not motivated primarily for financial gain or for a wage or salary.’
Being a volunteer for the advocacy service is a unique area of community work; volunteers need to enjoy meeting people and be good listeners, confident and able to express themselves, as their main role is to help people communicate with professionals.
Our volunteers also need to have the skills to access information and be interested in a number of possibly complex issues.

- Principles of Advocacy -
Advocacy has two main themes
Safeguarding individuals who are in situations where they are vulnerable.
Speaking up for and with people who are not being heard, helping them to express their own views and make their own decisions.
