Children and Young People with Additional Support Needs

Some times it is difficult to let others know how you are feeling.
It can be frustrating when people do not listen to you.

Advocacy Service Aberdeen (ASA) is a free, confidential, independent advocacy service based in the centre of Aberdeen. In January 2009, ASA received funding from Children in Need to offer an advocacy service to children and young people between five and eighteen years with additional support needs. A child is said to have additional support needs (ASN) and require additional support for learning (ASL) if they need more or different support to what is normally provided in school. We can offer advocacy support in many areas involving ASN; for example, where there are concerns with education, physical or mental health, family life or access to services.

Helen and Kate are children’s advocacy workers at ASA. They can:

  • Help children and young people to speak up for what they want.

  • Support and empower children and young people to develop their own advocacy skills.

  • Help a child or young person to make informed choices and ensure that they are involved in decisions that affect their lives.

  • Make sure the child’s voice is heard and that others listen, understand and respect what they have to say.

At all times in the advocacy/client relationship it is the child or young person who makes the decisions. Kate and Helen are loyal to the child or young person they are supporting and their aim is to safeguard that child or young person’s rights.

We have leaflets/cards available for children and young people. For further information about this service or to make a referral, please call Kate or Helen at Advocacy Service Aberdeen Tel: 01224 332314
